Honor Flight of Oregon Benefit film showing this Saturday, May 4

Honor Flight

Honor Flight of Oregon Benefit this Saturday, May 4 at 6:00 PM.

Please join us for a showing of the movie Honor Flight at Wilsonville Public Library on Saturday, May 4, at 6:00 PM. Tickets sold at the door are $5.00. Individual copies of the movie will be available for sale. This showing is a benefit for Honor Flight of Oregon.

Honor Flight is a heartwarming documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle.

The trips are called “Honor Flights” and for the veterans, who are in their late 80s and early 90s, it’s often the first time they’ve been thanked and the last trip of their lives. The 24-hour journey is full of surprises that deeply move all who are involved. It’s uncommon for World War II veterans to talk about the War, but the Honor Flight experience brings their stories out. Many veterans say, with the exception of their wedding day and the birth of their children, the trip is the best day of their life.

Storytime news x2

Spanish StorytimeThe good news is that Storytime returns next week, starting Tuesday, April 16. Storytime is currently on break as our Youth Services staff is getting everything ready for the Summer Reading Program (starts June 10!).

The new news is that our Monday evening Spanish Storytime will change formats – kids will make a different puppet each week, then use their puppet to help tell a story in Spanish. This is a bilingual program for Spanish and English speakers, as well as learners of either language.

For more information, contact the Youth Services Librarian Steven Engelfried at 503-570-1592 or engelfried@wilsonvillelibrary.org.

A boy, a tiger, and a boat

life of pi - lifeofpi

A boy, a bengal, and a boat

It sounds like a joke, right? But we’re serious – this month’s First Friday Film (tomorrow night, April 5, at 6PM) stars the film based on the book Life of Pi.

The film recently won four Academy Awards from eleven nominations, including Best Director. The book won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction, the 2003 Boeke Prize (a South African novel award), and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in Best Adult Fiction for years 2001–2003. And did we mention that the book has sold over 10 million copies worldwide? Not bad for a book that got rejected by five publishing houses!

So what’s all the hubbub about? Here’s the gist:

“After the sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan—and a 450-pound royal bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary and beloved works of fiction in recent years.”

Los Angeles Times Book Review called it “A story to make you believe in the soul-sustaining power of fiction.”
